Wednesday december 02nd to Saturday 19th Tom Cullen was born in Donnybrook, Dublin in 1934. His father was a butcher whose family ran a butchering business in the village for generations. He was educated in Synge Street Christian Brothers School. Tom's natural talent for drawing was noticed at an early age by his art teacher who encouraged him to take up painting professionally. However, on leaving school he entered the family business and his painting regrettably played second fiddle. 1973 brought a devastating bank strike in Ireland and, like so many other family businesses, the Cullen's family butchers went into liquidation. It was then that Tom took up painting professionally. With the tutoring of his artist friends and his own natural flair he soon became one of Dublin's leading artists. He shared his first solo exhibition with Robert Ballagh and had many successful solo exhibitions throughout his long career. These included: The Graphics Gallery, Stephens Green; Man of Aran, Aran Quay; Ashling Gallery, Madison Avenue, New York. Tom lectured in The National College of Art and Design, Thomas Street, Dublin and taught art in Blackrock College. He spent six years painting on the continent, primarily in Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland. Tom developed a distinctive style over the years. Known primarily for his scenes of vanishing Dublin, his application of paints is bold and knowing, adding strength and character to the work. Tom used a palette knife technique and painted with a range of harmonious colour tones. The resultant, unique style can only be accredited to the artist himself. Tom sadly passed away after a short illness in May, 2001 at the age of 66. With this event a deep sadness touched the world of Irish art. Tom's passing marked the end of an era as he took with him his ingenious style and scenes of Dublin in the "rare old times". As old Dublin, as it was once known, fades rapidly into dear memories, so too does our friend Tom. May these memories of this great artist and his paintings live forever. A LIMITED AMOUNT OF WORKS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR SALE   Philo 60th - click here to view Phil Lynott 60th Birthday Tribute Exhibition On Thursday August 20th at 6p.m. Philomena Lynott opened an exhibition to commemorate the 60th birthday of her son Philip Parris Lynott who passed away after a short illness on January 04th 1986. 'The Rockers' and 'Glyder'- 2 amazing Thin Lizzy Tribute Bands helped us to celebrate this momentous occasion. To help commemorate this event The Green Gallery and Roisín Dubh Trust are having a vast selection of original works of art, limited edition prints on display and available for sale. There is also an amazing selection of precious memorabilia on display. Admission is free, though a contribution to the Roisín Dubh Trust would be appreciated. The exhibition continues until Saturday August 29th.   'In Dublin's Fair City'. - click here to view On Thursday July 16th at 7pm The Lord Mayor, Cllr. Emer Costello opened an exhibition of art works of Dublin scenes, titled 'In Dublin's Fair City'. All of the paintings are from the hands of Dublin based artists. Both Native Dubliners and Foreign Nationals. It is indeed a coming together of skills from all over the world in celebration of the love for our great City . Artists will include; Tetyana Tsaryk, born in 1969 in Chernivtsi Ukrainian Bartek, born in 1974 in Warsaw, Poland. Serguei Zlenko, born in the Republic of Georgia in 1960 Norm Stiff was born in Canada in 1960 Ross Eccles, born in Blackburn in 1937 Maire Flanagan, born in Co. Mayo Peter Knuttel , born in Dublin in 1945 Noel Lewis, born in Dublin in 1940 John Schwatschke, born in Dublin in 1943 Stephen Cullen, born in Dublin in 1959 Tom Cullen, born in Dublin (1934. 2001) Kenneth Donfield born in Dublin in 1962 There is in excess of 80 Paintings and etchings exhibited and subjects are mostly architectural street canal and figurative and are primarily impressionist expressionist and realist in styles. The exhibition will continue until Saturday August 15th.
